How to recognise an ability from its icon

An ability icon is a small illustration, not a complete description of a champion. Learn to examine it in layers before choosing a name. This routine works with the ability game and the five-question recognition quiz.

Read the shapes before the colours

Start with the largest shape. Is there a weapon, a face, an animal, a projectile or a circular effect? Separate the central object from the background. Imagine the image without its colour: would the outline still tell you something? This prevents a blue background or a golden glow from becoming your only reason for a guess.

Compare two plausible candidates

Think of two candidates that could fit the same visual theme. Then ask what would distinguish their abilities: a weapon's shape, a characteristic creature, or the direction of an effect. Do not infer a champion's region, resource or damage type from the icon alone. Those are separate facts that the illustration may not communicate. If you cannot distinguish the candidates, treat your choice as a hypothesis.

Turn an answer into a memory

After answering, open the revealed champion's page and compare the passive, Q, W, E and R. Match the icon to an ability name and description. On your next practice round, recall one specific detail rather than the whole picture. Keep portraits and ability icons in separate exercises: recognising a face does not automatically mean you know the champion's abilities. Some ability descriptions are reference text and can change with updates; these exercises do not predict current patch strength.
