Clue lab: how do you eliminate candidates?
What does an amber role cell after an Ahri guess actually prove? What does Yone’s year arrow tell you about Yasuo? The teaching target is visible from the start: the goal is to explain what the feedback eliminates, rather than memorise an answer.
Lux and Ahri: amber roles do not confirm one role
Two candidates can look like mages without sharing every trait. Here Lux is the teaching target and Ahri is the submitted guess. Start with roles, then compare how much additional information range and resource provide.
This is an open-answer teaching example, separate from today’s puzzle. It does not award ranked points.
A shared role does not prove that Lux’s entire role list is identical to Ahri’s. Amber says the lists intersect but are not equal. Choosing another familiar mid-laner is therefore insufficient: the relationship between that candidate and your guessed champion must reproduce the observed feedback.
One guess, seven elimination questions
This is a possible order for applying the clues. Each row adds a condition to the candidates surviving the previous step. The game shows the cells together; here you can inspect their separate effects. A redundant clue may eliminate nobody, which is also useful to recognise.
- ≈ RoleBefore 173 → 26
Your guess’s value: Mid
At least one entry is shared, but the full lists differ. Amber does not establish a single confirmed role or region.
Eliminated: 147 · Remaining candidates: 26 - ✓ RangeBefore 26 → 17
Your guess’s value: Ranged
All stored values for this trait must match the guess. Sharing only one entry is not enough.
Eliminated: 9 · Remaining candidates: 17 - ✓ ResourceBefore 17 → 16
Your guess’s value: Mana
All stored values for this trait must match the guess. Sharing only one entry is not enough.
Eliminated: 1 · Remaining candidates: 16 - ✓ GenderBefore 16 → 7
Your guess’s value: Female
All stored values for this trait must match the guess. Sharing only one entry is not enough.
Eliminated: 9 · Remaining candidates: 7 - · RegionBefore 7 → 6
Your guess’s value: Ionia
There must be no shared entry for this trait. A candidate sharing one of the guessed values cannot explain this red cell.
Eliminated: 1 · Remaining candidates: 6 - ↓ YearBefore 6 → 4
Your guess’s value: 2011
The target must have been released before the guessed champion. A champion from the same year does not satisfy the arrow either.
Eliminated: 2 · Remaining candidates: 4 - · SpeciesBefore 4 → 4
Your guess’s value: Vastaya
There must be no shared entry for this trait. A candidate sharing one of the guessed values cannot explain this red cell.
Eliminated: 0 · Remaining candidates: 4
Candidates compatible with all the clues 4
A candidate’s missing value is not treated as a contradiction. More than one name may therefore remain. These names are compatible with this catalogue and this guess; they are not ranked by popularity or win rate.
If a step eliminates nobody, it may repeat information already established by an earlier condition. Read the cells as cumulative constraints rather than unrelated guesses. In a later round, preserve confirmed range and ask a new question about a distinguishing trait such as region or species.
A one-minute check
Read the explanation
The first claim follows from the cell. The others do not follow from a role intersection. One amber role cell cannot establish every playable lane or the champion’s region.
